Description
Standing in the heart of Norfolk's undulating fields, Bircham Windmill now looks as it did over 100 years ago. At that time over 300 mills ground corn for horse and cattle feed and bread-making in Norfolk. Today, very few windmills are left, and Bircham Mill is considered one of the best still remaining: it is the only windmill in working order in the area open to the public. Visitors can climb the five floors up to the fan stage and, when possible, on windy days, visitors can also see the sails and the milling machinery turning. There are also many items of interest to see in the tearooms, bakery and grounds. Our cycle hire business is long established and very popular. We have bikes to suit all the family, including burley trailers, tag alongs, child seats, tandems and all sizes of bicycles from small - five year-olds to large adult frames. As well as suitable bikes each customer receives a fully described route and map for their length of hire, helmets if required and the reassurance of a back-up service if problems are experienced. Our routes go along quiet back roads through the pretty Norfolk countryside and range from a short hour cycle to a pub lunch to a full day out. A new range of walk routes has been produced for this season and are available to buy from the mill. The walks range from a short village walk to longer rambles exploring the beautiful Norfolk countryside. Bircham Windmill is a perfect point to start a ramble with free parking, toilets and tea room. Open from 31st March to 30th September 2010 from 10am - 5pm. See website for prices and further information.
