About

Plings are activities that take place in the free time of young people, at youth, sports, education, community or other centres. Agencies that organise Plings in these venues can range through local authorities, community, voluntary sector and private sector organisations. Any Pling should provide a safe, secure and positive environment for young people.

The Plings project itself provides a bank through which providers of activities can pool and aggregate information. This can then be published and disseminated through a variety of channels, including the Plings website but also additional web channels, mobile phones and other media.

Alongside this process of aggregation and syndication, the project also has a second, equally important, strand, that of feedback from relevant stakeholders about the availability, scope, quality and direction of a their Plings. We call this Plingback.

Plings is a project led by Substance that aims to build a national dataset of Places to Go, Things to Do for young people aged 13-19.
We work with a mix of local, regional and national partners across all aspects of the project, including those concerned with the delivery of activities, information and engagement.

We understand that young people are already using digital tools and channels to talk to others about issues in their lives, such as Places to Go, Things to Do. Our approach is to work with this development rather than to resist or seek to replace it. We believe that via a national Plings dataset, listening, capturing and responding to such feedback can be made more engaging, fluent and transparent.
